For example, let’s look at a 100% bovine-liver supplement taken at the maximum common dosage of six capsules per day (about 3 grams):

  • 3 grams of dried liver ≈ 14 grams of fresh liver (since fresh liver is ~75–80% water).

  • Fresh beef liver contains 16,000–25,000 IU of vitamin A per 100 grams.

  • Therefore, 14 grams of fresh liver provides roughly 2,300–3,600 IU of vitamin A.


That meets or slightly exceeds the U.S. RDA for women but is less than half the conservative upper safe limit of 10,000 IU/day set by the National Academies’ Dietary Reference Intakes. In other words, even at the highest recommended dose, a quality organ supplement provides safe, physiologic levels of vitamin A—nowhere near toxicity. Additionally, most organ blends combine liver with kidney, heart, and—for women—ovary, uterus, and other tissues, all much lower in vitamin A. This dilutes total retinol intake while adding a spectrum of minerals, peptides, and cofactors that support hormone balance, detoxification, and cellular repair. The result mimics a traditional ancestral diet: a little bit of many organs, not an excess of any single one.


Finally, always ensure your supplement source tests for heavy metals. These can accumulate in liver tissue due to agricultural chemicals, water contamination, or soil pollution. Organ supplements made from organic, free-range, grass-fed cattle typically have the lowest toxin levels.
